What is a fungal nail infection?

If you have thick, yellowish-brown , chipped and sometimes foul smelling toe nails you may have a fungal infection. A fungal nail infection occurs when a fungus attacks your fingernail, a toenail or the skin under your nail. Fungi can attack your nail through small cuts in your skin around the nail or through an opening between your nail and nail bed.

A fungal nail infection may lead to more serious problems if you have diabetes or a weak immune system.

Fungal organisms grow best in warm moist places and can spread from person to person. You can get a fungal nail infection from walking barefoot in public places such as locker rooms, showers or pools. If you have athletes foot it can spread from your skin to your nails.

How is a fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) diagnosed?

You doctor needs to examine you and will very often take a sample of the nail and send it out to a laboratory for testing.

Is the laser painful?

No. No anesthesia or injections are required for the treatment. A gentle laser beam of light is passed over your nails. The laser does not effect healthy tissue or affect your activities.

How long does it take for nails to clear?

Nails could take from 6 to 12 months to grow out. It takes the same amount of time as taking oral medications just without side effects.

How long does the treatment take?

It takes approximately 15 minutes and two treatments are required.

Is it safe?

Yes. It is FDA approved. Unlike oral medications on the market there are NO risks to the liver or kidneys and there are no age or health restrictions.
